The SEC has released 4 sample papers for the new specification, giving us an insight into what physics exams will look like from 2027. There are two papers at higher level, and two papers at ordinary level.
They are available here: Senior Cycle Redevelopment - State Examination Commission
A few key points:
the exam is 2.5 hours long
students must answer q.1 (which covers a range of topics) and 5 from 6 over the rest of the paper.
all questions are of equal value, worth 50 marks.
this means that the paper sums to 300 marks (6 X 50)
this also means (presumably) that the coursework/AAC will be worth 200 marks, creating the planned 60/40 split.
the exam uses a completion booklet, very similar in style to that used for maths - with squared paper for students to use for written answers, diagrams, calculations and/or graphs.
The new system will create 6 possible selections of questions from which students must choose (or more realistically, they will choose 1 question from 6 to leave out)
